          A 6-digit OTP code on a phone

When you sign up for Facebook, Zalo or Shopee, or log in to your bank, you are often asked to type a 4–6 digit code sent to your phone. That code is an OTP. This post explains what an OTP is, how it works, the common kinds of OTP and how to receive one safely when you would rather not use your personal number.

          What is an OTP?

OTP stands for One-Time Password. Each code works for a single verification and usually expires after a few minutes. Because every attempt gets a new code, someone who learns an old code cannot reuse it, which makes OTPs much safer than a fixed password.

How does an OTP code work?

          1. You enter a phone number in the app, for example Zalo.
          2. The app's server creates a random code and sends it to that number by SMS or by an automated voice call.
          3. You type the code into the app. If it is correct and still valid, the number is verified.

All the app checks is that you hold the number at the moment of verification: whoever receives the code can complete it.

          Common kinds of OTP

          KindHow it arrivesTypical use
SMS OTPA text message to the phone numberSigning up for Zalo, Shopee, Facebook, TikTok
Voice OTPAn automated call reads the codeWhen SMS is slow or the app prefers calls
Authenticator OTPGoogle Authenticator and similar appsTwo-factor authentication for important accounts
Email OTPAn email messagePassword resets, email verification

Why does every app ask for a phone number?

A phone number helps apps block fake accounts, limit spam and let you recover your account if you forget your password. Each number can usually register only a few accounts, so people who need several accounts for work (online shops, page managers, app testers) often run into limits.

Receiving an OTP without your personal number

You can rent a number to receive an OTP, one rental at a time: choose the service, get an active number, and the code sent to it shows up on your screen. On OTPVN:

          • 900+ services on Vietnamese and Lao SIM cards, all listed on the services page.
          • Each rental waits about 4–7 minutes for the code. If no code arrives in time, the rental is cancelled and the money goes back to your balance automatically.
          • Voice OTPs work too: the call is recorded and the code is extracted for you.
          • Need another code on the same number? Rent it again within about 15–30 minutes of the previous rental.

For the exact steps, see how to rent a number for a Zalo OTP.

          Staying safe with OTP codes

          • Never read an OTP code to anyone, even someone claiming to be from your bank, a call centre or a delivery company.
          • Keep important accounts, such as banking and e-wallets, on your own phone number.
          • Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app for important accounts.
          • Use rented numbers for legitimate purposes and follow each service's terms.

          Frequently asked questions

How long is an OTP code valid?

It depends on the app, usually 1 to 10 minutes. When a code expires, request a new one.

What if the OTP never arrives?

Check your signal and spam folder, then request it again after 1–2 minutes. If you rented the number on OTPVN and no code arrives, the rental is cancelled and you are not charged.
